Field types

Thirteen types cover almost everything

Thirteen field types cover the overwhelming majority of field work, and every one of them works with no network at all.

Type Control What it handles
text Single line Names, references, codes
textarea Multi-line Observations, free notes
number Numeric keypad Decimal places and unit set in the panel
date Date & time picker Stored in UTC, shown in local time
select Option list Single or multiple choice
boolean Yes / no switch Optional third state for “not applicable”
photo Camera & gallery Resized on capture, uploaded on its own queue
gps Device location Accuracy stored in metres; weak fixes are refused
signature Signed on screen Signed with a finger, stored as an image
barcode Barcode and QR scanner The camera reads the code straight into the field
file File attachment A PDF, spreadsheet or document from the device
calculated Worked out automatically A formula over other fields, recomputed on the server
relation Link to another record A visit that points at an asset already on file
A hand water pump on a concrete plinth beside a field

A note on coordinates

Location is captured from the device in decimal degrees to six places — roughly 0.1 m — and the accuracy in metres is stored beside it. A reading taken indoors at ±400 m is refused rather than saved quietly, because a coordinate nobody can trust is worse than no coordinate at all.
